Dr. Abdul Rashid
Distinguished International Professor Dr. Abdul Rashid, former Chairman, Department of Islamic Learning, Dean Faculty of Islamic Studies and acting Vice Chancellor, University of Karachi is a well-known religious scholar, researcher, social worker and author. He has authored 33 books; presented/published/lectures delivered abroad 100 and awarded 44 Ph.D. degrees under his supervision. Among his publications, the book entitled ‘Islam the Religion of Tolerance and Peace’ (2005) and ‘Spectrum of Religious Education’ (2010) are well received in Europe and America. He has been Fulbright scholar, with his post doctoral thesis on ‘Tolerance: A Common Factor between Pakistan and the United States’.
This program helped broaden his vision of the world. On return home, he has continued to work for the promotion of Tolerance in the field – Religious and Social. In this perspective, as a recognized presenter he has attended 81 international and numerous local seminars and conferences as well as organized 25 seminars/ conferences on diverse important topics relating to tolerance and peace.
It is particularly mentioned that in line with the government’s policy of bringing Deeni Madaris (religious schools) in the main stream of quality educational institutions, in the wake of the ongoing socio-political scenario of the world, in general, and of Pakistan, in particular, Prof. Dr. Abdul Rashid has already established a strong liaison with the religious leaders of all schools of thought through personal contacts, seminars and conferences and for the first time in the history of Pakistan, he organized three programs for the senior teachers of religious institutions of all schools of thought.
Prof. Dr. Abdul Rashid has received 18 awards for his inter-faith services and his name has been included in the World ISESCO Directory of Specialists in Islamic Studies. American Biographical Institute named him ‘Man of the Year 1997’ and as Star Laureate 2006 by South Asian Publications. He established a NGO ‘Global Network for Promotion of Tolerance (GNPT)’ in 2000.
The Govt. of Pakistan awarded him civil award – Sitara-i-Imtiaz in 2006.
He is actively contributing through his academic pursuits, educational endeavors and social activities in spreading a vision of peace, tolerance, interfaith understanding and social development of our country. He is recognized as a voice of reason and sanity.
